How can we help?
Answers to the common stuff first. If you're stuck, email us with a diagnostics bundle and we'll dig in.
Frequently asked
Yes. No trial, no license key, no plan. It is a native app we wanted for ourselves and decided to ship.
Safari (macOS, built in), plus Chrome, Edge and Brave on both macOS and Linux via the connector. Firefox on Linux is in progress.
Chromium extensions run in a sandbox that cannot talk to desktop apps directly. The connector is a tiny native-messaging host that acts as the bridge. Safari extensions are app extensions, so no bridge is needed.
Liryn deliberately skips DRM-protected streams and YouTube. It is built for the open web: HLS/DASH streams you have a right to keep, and direct files.
~/Downloads/Liryn by default, with optional category subfolders (Media · Documents · Applications · Other). Change it in Settings › Downloads.
Settings › Policies. Add a host, path prefix or exact URL and matching captures are handed back to the browser's own downloader. Liryn also suggests a rule if you cancel the same kind of capture twice in 30 seconds.
It has full feature parity and is what we run, but it is labelled early access: packaging and desktop-environment coverage are still widening. Mint 22 / Ubuntu 24.04 are the tested targets.
Troubleshooting
Extension shows "Not connected"
Reinstall LirynConnector.pkg, then quit and reopen the browser. Check System Settings › Privacy & Security for a blocked "LirynNativeHost" prompt.
Capture dialog never appears
The site may be DRM, YouTube, or on your block list (Settings › Policies). Also confirm Liryn is running — captures are delivered only to a live app.
Stream stops at N%
Session-bound streams expire their tokens. Re-open the page in the browser and press Retry in the inspector; Liryn reuses the fresh session context.
Update check fails
Liryn uses Sparkle against downloads.liryn.app/appcast.xml. Corporate proxies that strip TLS can break signature verification — allow the host.
Extension shows "Not connected"
Open Liryn › Extensions and click Enable background capture, then Register native host. Snap/Flatpak browsers cannot see native hosts; use the distro or vendor .deb instead.
Capture service will not start
Open Liryn › Extensions and click Enable background capture. If the status still shows a problem, export diagnostics from Liryn and send them to support.
Streams download but will not assemble
Assembly uses the distribution FFmpeg installed with Liryn. Truncated output is rejected on purpose — retry the transfer.
Wayland: window has no shadow / wrong theme
Known cosmetic differences on GNOME Wayland during early access. Paper/Slate switching itself works; the shell chrome follows GTK4 defaults.
Diagnostics bundle
From Liryn: Settings › Diagnostics › Export bundle. Or from Terminal, collect the app log and attach it to your email:
Open Liryn › Extensions and include the capture and browser status shown there when you email support:
log show --predicate 'subsystem == "com.aretyx.liryn"' \
--last 1h > ~/Desktop/liryn-diag.log
Liryn › Extensions
Logs contain URLs of captured media. Review before sending; nothing is uploaded automatically.
